The No-Poo Movement

Raise your hand if you have caught wind of the No-Poo movement…and not that kind of wind?

In July I was talking to a girlfriend about the "No-Poo" Movement. Ummmm, what the hell is that? No shampoo! The idea is to stop using shampoo that strips your hair of natural oils and helps heal your scalp. Our discussion started with the waste of plastic bottles in the shower and minimizing our footprint as much as we can control in our homes, and then she told me she had just stopped washing her hair! She was a week in and it looked great!

I was game to give it a try. My hair is very fine, and I always feel it’s thin and just blah. I haven’t had a proper cut for about 1 year and started growing my bangs out during the winter. I was in hair limbo and up for anything that might give it more volume and have more waves. So…I gave it a shot. For the last 3 months, I have gone shampoo free. But don't worry, I am getting my annual cut today!

To begin, I brush my hair every night before the shower, This brings the oils through the follicles rather than sitting on the roots. It was greasy for about 3 days, then balanced out really nicely. I had WAY more volume, it looked a little wild, I had no more static and while the cut was really bad - I eventually cut it myself - my hair has looked really good.

Here is a little timeline of my No-Poo progression:

If you want a good laugh here you go! This is what happens when your girlfriend teaches you how to cut your own hair…Disclaimer, Rob had to clean it up because it looked super bad. But, look how crazy the volume is when I brushed it out!

After 3 months, I am excited to get my hair cut and washed today. I may not use as much shampoo as I did before this little experiment, and have found some really great shampoo alternatives, but my feral days are behind me!
