A Moment for YOU!
I take self care very seriously. Rob has seen first hand how I can fly off the deep end if I don’t get in enough exercise or alone time…or both! When I feel that internal volcano about to erupt, I know I need to take care of myself, and warn my hubby.
I am very lucky he is such a hands on dad, and that Waylon loves going on outings and to the winery with him. But just getting the family out of the house for an hour doesn’t mean self care, that is just a quiet hour.
For me to decompress, I go for long walks without any cars or people, beach walks, hike up a mountain, jump on my Peloton, or take pilates. I also need to let my thoughts flow freely and write down not only the things that are bothering me, but also the things that inspire me. I am making an effort to journal more often, even if it is in part to keep my penmanship legible. That said, I was a creative writing major and feel it’s nuts that I don’t have a stack of journals to my name. Note to self…start writing more.
Self care, for me personally, is about a balance in all areas of life. Wellness, fitness, emotional well being, minimizing and processing stress, trying to keep my cool, and staying true to myself. Easier said than done right? My suggestion - that I also need to remember - is to schedule a time of the day that is dedicated to you. Just you. Whether it’s 10 minutes before the family is up, 30 mins after drop off, 20 mins during a lunch break, or an hour at the end of the day…make time for yourself.
Do something you love. Read a book, get some exercise, take a bath, get a massage, or just sit quietly with a cup of tea or dirty martini, It ALL counts!
xx, Emily
