Dip-Dye Dish Towels
Raise your hand if you love upping your dish towel game every few months? Over here we do a LOT of cooking…and cleaning…and can never have enough dish towels laying around at arms length. I’m making a huge effort on my part to minimize waste and the use of paper towels, so I decided to make a few sets of cute towels that look good on display, but also serve a great purpose.
Since I am on my natural dye kick, I thought it would be a cute application to try it.
I treated my fabric with alum (found in the spice section at the grocery store) by adding a few tablespoons to hot water until it’s dissolved. I soaked about 4 towels at a time for an hour each then rinsed them out.
Before I treat my fabric, I made my dye baths with avocado, cabbage, and acorns. For the Avocados I boiled and simmered avo pits for a a few hours - or overnight if you want it darker pink. Chop up a small head of red cabbage and cover with a couple inches of water. Bring it to a boil and then let it simmer for an hour. Drain the water - which will be blue - then you are ready to go. The acorns took a bit more time. I cleaned them, brought them to a boil, then soaked them overnight.
When the dyes were ready, I took the treated fabric (still damp) and draped half of them inside the pot while the other was outside. Having the towel wet helps to absorb the dye better. I did dip half the dye in avocado and the other side in acorn to create a different look.
It was a fun little experiment and now I have some cute kitchen accessories! They are available here or give it a go at home!
